Wayne Phillips, Curator with the Louisiana State Museum, will discuss the recently opened exhibition, “Grand Illusions: The History and Artistry of Gay Carnival in New Orleans. This is the first-ever comprehensive exhibition on the subject of gay Carnival and a pioneering in-depth look at the intriguing history and extraordinary visual artistry of the celebration will showcase the artists and their work with a wide range of artifacts and will include costumes and videos from the famous tableau balls of many of the krewes. Over one hundred items will be presented, many of which have never before been seen. The exhibition opened June 6 coinciding with the fiftieth anniversary of the Stonewall Rios in New York City.
