NATIONAL HISTORIC REGISTER STRUCTURE (1973)
Constructed by Smedley and Woods in 1888 as part of the first water system in Baton Rouge, the wrought iron standpipe is 15 feet in diameter and 100 feet high. Baton Rouge Coal and Towing Company owned a portion of this property prior to the above date and used it primarily as a storage and dumping facility along Natchez Street (later Front Street and River Road). Although no longer in use, the standpipe provides significant documentation of early Baton Rouge and of engineering and technological development.
