Nauman House

Hickey Duncan Mather Town; Block 1, part of Lot 6

Building Details

Total Square Footage: 5,000
Number of Floors: 2
Date of Construction: 1928 (?)
Architectural and Historical Significance: Theme: Commercial Architecture
Level of Significance: Local
Classification: SIGNIFICANT
Research on this property has been inconclusive regarding the date of construction. Tax assessment archives and conveyance records clearly show that the property was acquired by the Nauman sisters in 1913 from T. W. Atkinson. The parcel was vacant at that time, proved by a tax assessment on the property but no assessment on improvements. In 1915 a tax assessment on the improvements was recorded. Therefore the Nauman sisters caused to be erected on the property the building and place of business known as Nauman's Gift Shop or Nauman's Specialty Shop sometime between 1913 and 1915, probably in 1914. An archival photograph taken of the area in the early 1920's however, does not seem to show the existing building to be present on this site. It is possible that the existing building is the second building to be built at this location. The current owner believes the existing building was built in the year following construction of the old Heidelberg Hotel, that is 1928.
