EPA BIKE SHARE PLANNING GRANT
East Baton Rouge City-Parish has been awarded a grant from the U.S Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Building Blocks for Sustainable Communities Program to receive technical assistance in the pursuit of a Bike Share development strategy. EPA staff and experts will visit Baton Rouge and meet with area stakeholders during a two day workshop that focuses on developing an efficient, safe, and economic bike share plan.
This is the second grant award from EPA to the East Baton Rouge City-Parish since receiving technical assistance for the Downtown Greenway schematic plan in 2012 from their Greening America’s Capitals Program; the final plan was completed in the fall of 2013.
Partners with the City-Parish in this grant include: Mayor’s Office, DDD, BRAF, CPEX, BREC, CRPC, CPPC, BRAC, RDA, LSU, Southern University, BCBS of Louisiana Foundation, AARP, Mid City Redevelopment Alliance, and Bike Baton Rouge.
“A Bike Share Plan for the City-Parish will complement the continued public investment in alternative transportation projects downtown and the recent metro council adoption of Complete Streets. We are very excited to welcome EPA and their planning experts once again to Baton Rouge,” East Baton Rouge City-Parish Mayor-President Melvin “Kip” Holden.
EPA will conduct the bike share workshops within the next few months through the Partnership for Sustainable Communities and coordination with the U.S. Department of Housing and Development (HUD) and the U.S. Department of Transportation. Stay tuned for upcoming workshop details!
“This EPA Bike Share grant dovetails with the design intent of the Downtown Greenway, accentuating its economic and social potential. I envision bike share stations strategically located along the Downtown Greenway paths to be used by the community for recreation and commerce. This grant also aligns with the 70 bike racks that will be installed downtown over the next year in a grant partnership with CRPC,” Davis Rhorer, DDD Executive Director.
