Plan Baton Rouge III released
The future of Downtown Baton Rouge is progressing with the release of the Plan Baton Rouge III Master Plan designed to guide the next generation of downtown growth and investment.
On Tuesday, May 12 the Downtown Development District held a special meeting where the plan was presented to the public.
The plan reflects input from thousands of community members and outlines a long-term vision centered on reconnecting the city to the Mississippi River, expanding housing and economic opportunities, improving mobility and accessibility, and creating more vibrant, walkable neighborhood centers.
Plan Baton Rouge III includes more than $1.5 billion in early investment opportunities and aims to triple downtown’s residential population while creating 10,000 jobs over time.
At its core, Plan Baton Rouge III is guided by five key principles:
- Activating the riverfront as a “front porch” for the city
- Diversifying the downtown economy
- Creating walkable neighborhood centers
- Connecting cultural and civic assets
- Improving transportation and accessibility
“Plan Baton Rouge III builds upon decades of community-driven planning efforts and establishes a shared vision for the future of Downtown Baton Rouge that focuses on reconnecting the community to the riverfront while continuing the evolution of downtown into a more vibrant mixed-use district with additional residents, businesses, and amenities,” said Whitney Hoffman Sayal, DDD Executive Director. “Like many peer cities that have successfully leveraged their waterfronts to drive growth and investment, Baton Rouge has an opportunity to invest in quality-of-life improvements and public spaces that attract businesses, retain talent, and generate long-term economic and cultural benefits for the entire region.”
Plan Baton Rouge III will be heard from the Planning Commission and voted on by the Metro Council.
