Opéra Louisiane Presents: Life, Liberty, and Laughs!
Just twenty years after the founding of the United States, New Orleans earned its place as America’s first city of opera in 1796. Six decades later, as the nation emerged from the Civil War, the sparkling wit and charm of European operetta - from Offenbach to Gilbert and Sullivan - captivated audiences across a growing republic.
With Life, Liberty, and Laughs!, Opéra Louisiane celebrates the American spirit through an evening of song, dance, and delightful satire. This spirited program offers a tongue-in-cheek look at Americans from our own perspective, while also exploring how our European and British counterparts have viewed us through the lens of operetta. The result is a joyful, witty, and distinctly operatic tribute to the people, personalities, and peculiarities that make America unique
